Hello all,

Got my confirmation for the new machine arriving next month - can't wait.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the following
  • Exhaust - ideally a slip-on for now so I'm not spending on the whole system. Just looking for better sound and style really.
  • Frame sliders
  • lights
  • Rim tape? I had some cheap amazon red rim tape on my CBR 500R but it started falling apart after a few years. Huge pain in the ass to take off too. Might seem unnecessary but I think it improves the look significantly.
  • Not specific to my bike but I think I'll want an anti-theft security system as I live in the city and it will be parked outdoors. Not ideal but that's city life.
Any parts that fit the 2021 would fit the 2022 yeah?
Any other suggestions let me know, definitely want to make it look as sleek as possible.

Welcome, great bike choice!!! Answers to your questions:

- Exhaust. Lots of information on here already in regards to exhausts so please search a bit, your question will have been answered. Probably a few times, lol!!! To start you out, the design of the exhaust is one piece so you’re looking at a full system unless you want to hack and weld something onto it to fit. I‘d recommend not doing that.

- Sliders. Again, tons of info around, searching is your friend. To start you out: the 650 series has a motor mount above the transmission/behind the cylinder that’s perfectly strong for what it does but doesn’t like side impacts. The cheap (and some expensive) frame sliders like to use that spot to mount sliders because it’s a great, tucked in spot. The problem is if you tip over just right it cracks the engine case, so get the type that has multiple mounting points so that’s not the sole impact point or look into how much bodywork costs and determine if you actually want them. I‘d suggest case covers instead.

- Lights. Never heard of a problem with the OEM setup on the R so if you’re talking led strips to make your bike glow my suggestion is don’t be that guy.

- Rim tape. I like Motion Pro, it works and stays great.

- Theft stuff. Get good insurance, a hefty lock and a cover. If they want your bike they’ll take it, you want to make them look for an easier target. As far as an alarm and tracker go, everyone ignores alarms nowadays and if someone takes my bike I hope like hell they keep it because I do NOT want it back.

- The ‘21 and ‘22 are identical.

Enjoy the bike!!!

Hey Mike

First thing to say is I have an Uncle Mike who is the biggest bike guy I know. LOL!

Exhaust. Fair enough for searching. I totally did not realize that it's one piece, assumed there would be a slip on option like my 500R. Probably have to put it off for a year, unless my taxes come back favourably... This is one of the reasons why I ask, is you learn these things instead of being surprised later.

Sliders. Do you mean something like this? I see it has two bolts for mounting. This is the first hit on google, so I would be hoping to pay less than that. But they seem decently subtle which is nice.

Rim tape. I see the clear here but no coloured? I'll be looking for some orange to match the trim.

Thanks for the reply!

Exhaust: Yup. That's a drawback to "modern" under engine exhaust design. My Ducati is that way, the XSR900 my dad just bought is that way, etc. Makes it MUCH more expensive to replace, however when I had my 650 I had the Akra pipe and all I can say is is hurt the wallet to buy but I was VERY happy with it. I am hearing their quality isn't what it once was but still to me the one to buy.

Sliders: Those are pretty decent and yes were what I was talking about. They still mount to the "fragile" spot but should have enough strength because they mount to a second location as well.

Rim Tape: What you linked it more of a rim strip used to seal spokes, but it looks like Motion Pro doesn't make the decorative stuff anymore. Pro Grip is good, try to find this stuff there: https://www.denniskirk.com/pro-grip...ShG0jakUOcZxVbOZolHH52B1mbAkprShoCEcEQAvD_BwE

Good luck!!!

Hey Mike, are you saying the engine case covers would serve the same purpose as the frame sliders? In other words I could choose one or the other? I'd probably rather go with case covers as they bother me less in terms of aesthetics. Got any suggestions on specific ones?

Yes, sort of:

The original idea behind a slider is to keep the bike rideable in the event of a minor tip over or slow speed crash. They’ve sort of turned into something that people look at now to stop the expensive bodywork from hitting the ground in the event of a slow speed drop like a garage or gas station tip over.

So saying that, covers for the case serve the same purpose in the “old thought” of sliders but under the new rules bodywork could still touch but your cases wouldn’t be cracked and leaking. And look up the cost of new bodywork in the US, it’s pretty reasonable. In the end though, they both do the same thing.

R&G and GB are the 2 main brands, both are great quality so either will work.

For 2-point mounting sliders, you can check this as well:

RDmoto.eu

You can see them on my CB here:

Hey Bill

Thanks for posting this, I would never have found this brand by myself, and they are almost two thirds less in price than the Evotechs which is apparently the only other option for this bike.

Strongly considering these sliders, I e-mailed them with a few questions. My only hesitation is getting these sent from Czech Republic to Canada, if I have a problem with them it'll be a major pain sending them back. How was your purchase experience with this manufacturer? How did installation go and how do you like the feel - are they sturdy?

Overall, I am very happy with delivery and product quality.
The installation was straightforward, I just later used longer bolt (M10 I think) and some spare spacers in order to make the actual slider (not the whole mount) stick out a bit more, especially at the left side, where the engine case is more vulnerable (protrudes at a lower height).
I remember that even at my old GSX650F, where mounting was way more complex (included a side-to-side bar), fitment was perfect.

Hey

I got an aftermarket back light for my 2021. Upgraded the looks from behind alot in my opinion and should fit to your bike too. ( Tecbike )

The best, cheapest mood we can do is do nothing.
With the saved money we can buy many OEM engine covers.
Frame sliders are one of the best ways to damage both frame or engine in the attachment points. Can you imagine the energy that goes through them when a 200Kg bike hits the ground, with the kinetic energy from the speed it is traveling? It´s immense and those points were not structurally developed to withstand that. I do not have prove of that, but you might believe me.
My personal opinion, obviously...

Check these out for an alternative. A very reliable and sturdy product.

Oggy Knobbs Sliders

Oggy Knobbs Case Savers
I tried doing a checkout to check shipping price but it wouldn't give me an option to ship to Canada. Assuming it's around $50 CAD it'll wind up being just about the same as the Evotechs that I would get in less than a week.
Thanks for posting.

Good to know, I will ask them to include some spacers and a longer bolt if they can if I go ahead with that purchase.

Thanks Bill

Yes that was another thing I was thinking about. But, let's say there's a decent chance that one drop costs me around or over $400 (the price of the Evotech sliders) in plastics + case covers but this could be avoided with sliders then I would say they're worth it.
In terms of damaging the frame I am only considering the options with multiple mounting points.
As for a crash going at speed that is not what I am buying them for. I am only concerned about it being dropped while standing still. I live in the city and have seen one too many of those videos on Reddit of random strangers just pushing bikes over as they walk down the street. With my last CBR 500R it was once blown over by a heavy windstorm because I had the cover attached underneath it, and I had a few near misses slipping on gravel etc and only caught it because it's such a light bike.
Basically I am just concerned about some bad luck happening in the first year or two of having a brand new machine. I have never owned a new vehicle before.

Looking for the best method to secure the keys in the ignition. Spate of scrotes local to me taking keys from ignition when stopped at lights! Googled but cannot find anything or even a search criteria that offers results!

TIA

Attach a paracord tether to your bars. Put a loop on the end of the tether. Attach a short paracord lanyard to your key with a carabiner or other clip on the free end. That way when you put your key in the ignition, just clip the lanyard to the tether and the key is secure at red lights. The scrotes won't have time to release it before you are aware of what they're doing.

And the bonus is: you get have some fun making your tether and lanyard 😎

Hello.
I was never worried with that, but is a real threat!
I do it with my Garmin GPS to avoid dropping it "into the bushes", got that from my MTB experience.
I'll do something similar with the key! Thank for the reminder! 👍
