So I've picked up my bike today (done the intro bit in the relevant section)

I was advised of the 600 mile (might be 300) mile Service.

What does it entail and do you have to use a Honda garage?

Thanks.

Its 600 miles. Oil change and general checks over the bike including chain adjustment, clean and lube. Its best to get it done at a dealer to ensure you have no trouble should you need to make a warranty claim. No reason why you couldn't get it done at a reputable garage though.
If you do go to Honda, ask them not to valet the bike, they will just squirt tap water at it and leave to dry in the sun!

Oil...AND FILTER change! And then everything else Eaglemoto said!

Did you happen to get the Owner's Manual? If so all of your intervals are listed in there. ***Also a good place to keep track of your services!

If you bought the bike from a Honda dealer why would you not get them to do the 600 mile service , unless they are a long way from you. I wouldn't want to jeopardise the Honda warranty on a new bike.

You don't have to use a Honda garage. Just b service it where you bought it.
The 600mile service is part of the break in period. A new engine has a bunch of mechanical parts that still need to "bed in". This takes a couple of hundred miles and pollutes the oil much quicker than later in the bike's life. So an oil change is required (and oil filter change, which is something you always change with the oil) and the usual service checks as mentioned before are done.

I remember reading they usually use a different type of oil for the factory line fill up specifically meant for the breaking in process which has a shorter life span than regular oil. But don't take my word on that.

If you can show you did the service and bought the correct oil and filter, in the US you do not need to have a shop do the service.

Your countries rules may be different so I’d ask your dealer and consult your owners manual.

600 mile service DIY here....but purposely bought both oil and filter at the dealer where I purchased, obviously saving the sales receipt/proof of purchase. Some cell phone photos of ODO, documenting oil change in process.

That's all cool, I will just take it back to the Honda garage.

I've never bought any vehicle (car or bike) from new before, so I just wanted to see if it was needed by them or was it one of those typical sales things and I'd be better getting it done an independent garage.

Thanks for the responses!
