CBR650R CBR650R crazy handlebar vibration

Hi guys, sorry if this has been posted before, but I wanted to know if anyone has or had vibration in the clip ons to the point where it leaves your hands numb for days? Has anyone modded the bars in some type of way to reduce the vibration? By the way, the bike’s broken in with 2k miles on it. No mods on it besides a tail tidy.

Edit: let me not say hands, but rather my ring and pinkie fingers on my left hand. Last time I thought it was because of my ring, letting the ring conduct some kind of resonant frequency,and took a ride a few times without it, and it’s not that.

There a re vibrations around 6k rpm but they don't really leave my hands numb. and for days, thats pretty severe.

you could get bar weight thingies, not sure how effective they are.

As beneweis @beneweis said, there are vibrations around 6k RPM, but not so much that it numbs your hands. I've put on about 1800 miles on mine in a month, both in heavy commuter traffic and on the open highways - don't have any numbness in my hands.

Is your clutch too hard/heavy? It should feel very light, enough that you can squeeze with just 1 finger and a thumb.

Do you spend a lot of time in traffic, needing you to operate the clutch more?

No not really, mostly open roads. What bugs me is that every now and again I ride with just the throttle hand on the bars, giving the clutch hand a rest. And the fact that the right hand is always squeezing the throttle is bizarre that it’s not the right fingers that go numb, but the left ones that get intermittent breaks.

If it's your hands going numb, or "hand", there could be a number of reasons.

One, are you wearing gloves? After trying many, many gloves - from over sized to open fingered, cheap ones and more expensive - I find that ANY glove I wear except the open fingered ones will eventually start to tighten at the finger tips, making my hands get numb. Never would have thought in a million years it was the gloves but they DO have a huge impact on my numbness.

Two, bar placement. A simple adjustment of the bars can make a huge difference. Also, you may need some risers to help as well. Considering your hands are most likely being "pushed down" on the bars as well as your wrists being bent upwards this can be a factor with hand numbness.

Three, riding position. You wouldn't think that a slight lean can wear on nerves...but they can! So maybe look at a new seat.

Four, try some Grip Puppies. They're $10 - $12 and go on easily. If they don't feel right you're only out a few bucks.

Then again, it could just be the vibrations. But I generally think it's a combination of one or all of the above.

I do wear gloves, and haven’t changed them since the last bike. I read that gel gloves can help with vibes as well. I know that the stance on this bike is sporty, and perhaps it’s just the nature of the beast since I’m on the taller side as well. I think the best bet would be a combination of heavier bar ends, gel gloves, and those grip puppies. I just have to figure out which aftermarket bar weights are actually heavier than the stock ones.

yesterday my left hand bar end weight dropped out on a long run and I didn't notice any increase in vibration, and we were hitting it pretty hard at times.

A couple of years ago I bought some of the heaviest bar end weights I could find for my V-strom. Two totally different motorcycles but I couldn't tell any difference. I'm not a big fan of bar end weights, other than for cosmetic reasons. I just don't think they're going to make a big deal to vibrations - minimal maybe.

Good Evening..

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with my bike also.. I just recently got my bike serviced with the 600 mile check up where they did the oil change and checked the screws or whatever.. But sometime between 4K and 7k, the vibration gets so bad that numbness does occur..

Some people are just more susceptible to the high frequency vibrations a 4cyl engine puts out. It’s just the way it is, unfortunately. Maybe try to ride a triple or twin and see if that helps.

Op, I’d also suggest looking at your gear, I have huge problems with gloves and jackets, especially in the forearm area, where if they are at all tight I get hand numbness and tingling. Be sure they fit you snippy but nit tight.

So for both of you, a couple things I’d suggest:

- time and mileage. Some of these bikes are vibyer than other but everyone’s bike starts smoothing around 1500 miles and even more as you pass 2500. It’s a 4, though, and will have a high frequency tingle to it.

- make sure your gear isn’t binding you. See above.

- be sure everything is tight, adjusted for you and torqued correctly. Both of you have ‘19s, take it to the dealer, have them check it out.

- be sure your chain and sprockets are in line and adjusted correctly. Be sure your tires are balanced.

- despite Devilsfan @Devilsfan not liking them, heavier bar weights can and do help. Search around specifically for heavy bar ends, they are out there. I had a Throttlemiester on my 650 which used heavier bar weights and helped, I also run them on my Supersport. HVM (?) might be a company, or something similar.

- Grip Puppies were mentioned, probably the best $18 I have ever spent motorcycle wise. Seriously, they help, big time. My right hand doesn’t like the V Twin bump for very long and it was getting uncomfortable to ride more than a half hour or so at a time. Completely solved with the Puppies.

- do not replace or remove your current bar ends, or remove the inner weight, they do serve a purpose. Google a bit to see what they do and and how they work, it’s pretty interesting. Having said all of that, I bought a set of Sato bar ends and inner weights to run in my old NC700X when I put new bars for it and they worked great on that bike, the ends weren’t super heavy but the inners were and were also much longer so they made a huge difference. I’m using the inner weights on my Ducati to mount my Throttlemeister which is out of business and they don’t make one specific to the SS so incobbled one together myself and they work great along with the Grip Puppies.

So I guess I’m saying to not lose hope and keep trying to find what it is that will help YOU.
