All 650's Difficulty topping up fuel tank

I have a CB650R and I'm having trouble topping up using the pump at a Shell garage. It starts clicking, and doesnt flow even though the tank isnt completely full, and the display doesnt show full bars (one below full). As the tank isnt that large, this is a bit of a pain. My previous bike (Triumph 955) just had a hole in the tank, now I notice there is a sort of metal structure in the tank where the nozzle rests. Anyone have any tips?. BTW I am using the Shell garage, as it allows contactless payment, you pay using your phone before filling, no need to get off the bike or enter the kiosk.

I have no issues with my CB650F. Matter of fact, I've sometimes overfilled! May be a nozzle issue where European nozzles have a different size or contraption? I can take a US nozzle and place it half way down into the tank!

M @mange this may or may not be relevant, but here in CA we have the overflow/vapor recovery shield on the pump, and to fill up a bike you have to pull it back manually to get any fuel to flow at all. It’s designed to mate flush to the filler (on a car/truck), whereas the bike does not have that extra neck extension. I keep the nozzle just at the edge of the hole and it fills up fully, otherwise I will only get about 85% in.

You won't be able to fill the tank by putting the nozzle all the way in. It will auto shut off with a couple of litres of space left.

Hole the nozzle tip level with the inner cap guide and fill from there, paying attention to not pump fuel everywhere. A full tank is when the fuel touches/just covers that lower metal plate under the cap.

Yeah, the filler neck can be a PITA as far as getting a full tank of gas goes. Those days of no filler neck are long gone due to crazy chit like this happening.

When I fill up the nozzle doesnt get anywhere near the inner "cage" which designates max fill level, I just aim the stream of petrol through the central hole of the "cage". I dont think that inner hole is designed to have the filler nozzle pass through it, like the filler hole does in a car.

It is and it does (it's sized for force unleaded fuel only due to the cat fitted - just like cars).

Maybe you just have a bad nozzle? - I don't have such an issue (but then the 650r tank could be different to the 650f I have). Other 650r owners may be able to assist more. Maybe post a pic of the filler hole so I can "see"?

If you keep the tip rested yes it will click.
I just keep the tip lifted from the metal plate, and top it off all the way up (right below the cap), sorta PITA but it's the only way.
For me (I guess for the most of us using these bikes) is the only way to get a full tank.

I fill my tank with the pump nozzle just barely inside the inner hole. When the pump automatically shuts off, I pull the nozzle out and carefully direct the flow through that center hole until it's actually full. It's not a difficult process, but you can't put the nozzle all the way in the tank like you do with a car. Trying to fill it like a car will result in a poorly filled tank. Motorcycles require a little bit of finesse, rather than just shoving the nozzle in there and letting it do all the work.

If you have a vapor recovery nozzle, go to a different fuel station. Those things are a royal pain in the butt. You appears to be in the UK, and I know very little about the UK's fueling stations. Can you avoid the vapor recovery nozzles, or is that not an easy thing to do?

As others have said, just hold the tip of the nozzle right at the level of the "Full" ring, instead of putting the whole nozzle in. The system is designed for cars, to shut off when the fuel hits the nozzle tip. For us, with much smaller tanks, that doesn't work.

A side note, it is always a good idea to keep the nozzle in contact with the ring. Leaving it hovering in the air in the middle of the ring, allows the chance for static electricity to charge up. This can, in a rare occasion, cause spark, which obviously would not end well. Leaving the nozzle in contact with the ring inside the tank, keeps everything grounded, so static doesn't build

Thanks for that, I've filled up a couple of times using the advice in this thread, and got so much more in, feels like double the range. I do find it tiring holding the nozzle in the air though.

I have tried the breather hole and air does come out at the bottom off the pipe. Maybe have to take the tank off and have a look. Thanks for the reply

Wow, never thought of that. Must remember to do that in future.

This is the only reason I miss my 80’s center stand! Filling was a breeze. What I’ve learned so far is to go to a station with “good” pump handles and fill gingerly to top up the tank properly,
