So, I did not know the intake-tube screws or whatever were JIS and *NOT* Phillips screws. What happened then, was a phillips screwdriver rounded out 2 of the screws before I stopped and realized something was wrong. JIS instead of phillips....fun.

Anyway, what do I do now? How do I remove them? Should I give em' a whack with an impact driver to knock it loose or what.

I am trying to remove pair valves and so that is why these need to be removed.

Thanks

koofdome @koofdome just an FYI, we’ve discussed both topics (JIS & screw extracting) elsewhere, so I’ll give the brief answer:

Go to Harbor Freight and get the screw extractor set.

Do you think a rubber band will work? I saw that some people just use a rubber band and a drill on very LOW speed and it removes the screw.

Otherwise, harbor freight it is! And I looked up the OEM parts screws....those little tube screws are like $3 each!?!?!?

My advice is sort of generic, so there are several ways to fix your problem, and it depends on how rounded out the screw is. I did one when I was removing the PAIR back in the March, and realized my #2 Phillips was incorrect. I solved my problem with a brand new #2 Phillips that had never touched anything and had very definitive edges. (I also bought a JIS set). If you rounded it out completely a left-handed drill bit will most likely break it loose, even without the screw extractor being needed. Once they unseat, they come right out, they are just tight initially.

You won‘t regret the screw extractor set regardless, one of the best kits in my box for anything transportation-related repairing.

I am going to purchase an extractor kit this weekend and order some JIS screwdrivers.

What I have learned over time is to just have the right tools for the job, and do it once & do it right. Thanks!!

So true. In my experience, once you have the right tools, you'll always need them again at some stage and you'll look back and say "I'm glad I bought that".

Use an impact driver to get them loose, they’ll come out with a couple whacks.

I’ve gone years without a JIS screwdriver and worked on dozens of motorcycles without it so it’s not “must have” tool but something you want to have, especially on stubborn screws. Now that I have them, however, I’ll not be without one. A new, lightly used Phillips will be ok, but worn tip or the generic ones will strip easily.

I stripped the EXACT SAME screws a couple months ago! I was planning on doing a spark plug change, but ended up abandoning due to this. I'll deal with it later since the spark plug change was probably premature anyway (my bikes only on 8k miles).

The other two screws I did manage to get out both began moving with a 'snap', before twisting loose. I think these screws are torqued on super tight by Honda, and almost seem like they are seized the first time you try to take them out, leading to stripped heads etc if you don't have the correct tools. Really annoying, and must be pretty common.

I am going to attempt to remove them with the good ol' rubber band trick. Stick a thick rubber band on the phillips screw and torque it outta there. If that fails, I will use a dremel to cut the heads into a "flathead" screwdriver shape to remove em. I did order (6) new tube screws OEM from revzilla.....dam near $20 for 6 of those little things.

Will be ordering a JIS screwdriver kit asap lmao!

Check out amazon for the "Vessel Impacta" screwdrivers. They have a built in impact mechanism. Couple whacks with a hammer get every stubborn phillips loosened, that I have come across. Cheers!

If you don't have time to order those screwdrivers, or if you're past that point, try and find some "left handed" drill bits. They are made to cut in a CCW direction and will usually grab and spin out the screw.

koofdome @koofdome man our bikes are like twins lol. My oil filter failed same way as yours and I also had one of those velocity stack screws stripped.
Ended up getting a screw extractor to get it out
