CBR650R Ticking noise!

I’ve checked out a few threads about a ticking/clicking noise but none seem as bad as this & all others seem to have been classed as normal

I’ve attached two videos one at idle speed and one at 1800RPM, the ticking seems to be present right the way through the rev range... this noise is loud enough to be heard sat on the bike with a lid on

2019 CBR650R with 3k miles on the clock, full black widow exhaust system installed the ticking isn’t the exhaust headers these were tightened up a month ago, it sounds like it’s coming from the area where the air box connects to the engine block, this only started today after a 3 hour ride on the bike, has never made this sound before!

pair valve has been blocked off with a marble in the intake hose, haven’t got around to actually capping the plates, could this be the pair valve? it seems too noisy to be the pair valve but I’m not mechanically minded so I’m not sure!

Sorry looks like you have to press the little white square in the corner of each video which will redirect you to watch the videos! My bad!

Sounds like the pair valves to me. Have you lost your marble? 😂
I’ve lost my marbles but the one in the hose stands strong!😂

I’ve clamped either side of the marble too so it has no room to move around... is it just a case of the pair valve still trying to do it’s job just with no airflow?

I’ll do the job properly and plate them up and remove the junk and let you know how I get on! Cheers brammers!

Hi sorry for asking this again but I’ve asked in my tread with no reply and on the pair valve tread there isn’t a clear answer, removing the solenoid on CB650r do we need to replace with the 27ohm resistor?

Me and SpoonCB650R @SpoonCB650R did not have any issues without resistor
Initially I did put it on, but recently removed it without any issues.

But, I'm not sure if the ECU is programmed differently in EU/UK market that could cause the engine light to come on.
I'm also wondering if it would be different for the ABS version.

That’s exactly the reason I’m asking so many opinions, any way in a worst case scenario what happen if a MIL code shows? Limp mode? How to clear it?

I think Brammers @Brammers determined last year that the 14-16 did not need the resistor, but 17-forward did. IF it sets a DTC it will turn on the MIL, that’s the ECMs job. DTC will remain until you either plug it back in or put a resistor inline. It will probably store as HISTORY and then automatically turn off the MIL once it sees a correct value.

The DTC is set when the ECM is powered up and it runs the self-test on the circuit. It looks for a specific resistance value. Unplugged will be Out Of Range for what it’s supposed to be.

Hey,
You probably remember I had issue with noise, right? same ticking echoes louder through the exhaust can. PAIR Valve removal did not fix the issue. Just be clear. Its the nature of this engine. Can be from sparks?

Natural 650 inline 4 engine noise. Dont worry cuz you are hearing it from a noise freak!!!!! Just deal with it. it gets worst with aftermarket Exhausts especially Akra

Thank you! Guess I’ll just have to live with it, I did wonder why it was ticking all the way up the revs if it was the pair valve...
I’ll take the baffle out of the exhaust and drown it out😂

I know an Akra exhaust system doesn’t need PCV/tuning, but does anyone know if my black widow full exhaust without a PCV/tune could be causing the ticking, I.e running too lean and damaging something in the engine? I’ve tried to search other threads but answers only seem to apply to Akra exhausts🤦🏻‍♂️ Just trying to put my mind at ease, the ticking seems to be getting louder...

Did you replace the exhaust manifold gaskets when you installed your new pipe? If you don’t have a good seal, you’ll hear a ticking noise that could be what you’re hearing.

Thanks for the reply!!
I did yes, I used a brand new set when I replaced them and torqued them to spec, I also re-tightened them at the first sign of the ticking sound to rule out that being the cause😫

adammatheww @adammatheww I've got the same bike and recently fitted a Black Widow full system (this one). Did 4.5k miles with stock exhaust and never heard anything like this, so I'm convinced it's the new one.

I'm getting the ECU reflashed on 5-May and hope that will fix the problem, so will let you know. Took this video immediately after firing up on an early Spring cold morning (couldn't upload the video). Choke is active so it's a more pronounced noise (didn't note the revs), but it's audible in all gears when riding and the tapping speed increases with the revs.

I'm determined to solve it - definitely not something I'm happy to live with as it's taking some of the joy away from my new exhaust, and riding in general because I don't know what it is.

I'll let you know if it's sorted in a couple of weeks, but have you had any joy getting rid of it?

(I also replaced the gaskets and torqued to spec when fitting.)
