All 650's Timing chain re-installation help?

So I just adjusted the valve clearances on my bike and went to put it back together, but for the life of me I can't get the timing chain back on the cam shaft sprockets despite the fact that taking it off in the first place was easy peasey. It seems like it needs to be a couple inches longer or something, I don't know. I'm probably missing something simple and obvious, but I'll be darned if I know what that is. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Is the cam chain tensioner removed still?

I have the "cam chain tensioner lifter shaft" locked fully in, presumably removing tension from the cam chain tensioner, but nothing has been removed removed.

Ahh, I remember this. Bad language was present.

The camshafts have to in at some really funny angle to get them under the chain.

Once in, getting them aligned was "fun" as the timing marks don't line up until the camshafts are fully seated and bolted down. Before this they look off by about a tooth.

A pic would be very helpful here if I've missed the point.

Thanks for the replies, and no, I think we're on the same page, but here's a picture of what I'm talking about, just in case.

Here I'm holding the cam/timing chain completely taut, and there's not nearly enough length to make it around the sprocket on the left.
The only way I could get the chain around both sprockets was using the crazy angles and bad language that you mentioned, Brammers, but that leaves me with the two cam shafts jammed together with the chain being once again completely taut, holding one cam shaft or the other completely out of its little resting place (I think the manual call them the camshaft journals) with no way that I can see to get it in, as I try to show in the second picture.

(ignore the yellow string, it's just there so I don't drop the chain down inside the engine)
It's entirely possible that I'm just incompetent and this is no big deal at all, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find any videos or detailed descriptions if competent people doing this, so this is all I've got at the moment.

Are you sure the lifter assembly tensioner is still locked out? Doesn't take much to release that lock causing the shaft to shoot out and tension the chain again.
