Hey everyone,
I have a 2016 CBR650F with ~95.000kms. i have an appointment to check the valve clearances and the mechanic advised me the timing chain and tensioner are supposed to be replaced at 120.000kms. I do about 25.000km yearly and i was just wondering does anyone have experience with timing chains failing? I know tensioners and guides can get worn down and go bad after so many KMs on the bike so i plan on getting them replaced after checking them, but shouldn't the chain last pretty much the lifetime of the engine? Or am i thinking wrong? I haven't really got much experience on the insides of the 650F's engine so any answers and experiences are appreciated, thanks!

There’s a link to the service manual in the resources section, that will tell you what Honda recommends and when. Without looking at it, I’d believe its inspections and measurements.

Having said that, this is an interference engine meaning the valves will contact the piston if the cam chain breaks and in essence destroy your motor. So if you plan to keep it long term it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. Theoretically, the chain should last the life of the engine but it is a wear item.

We've seen a few damaged engines, but I can’t recall if it was because of the cam chain or that was something that also happened.
