Advice please guys.

I had a very minor hicup yesterday, I'm blaming a emergency stop when a sheep ran out but it caused me to lay the bike down. I got off pretty lightly but its made me think about getting some protection for the engine and paint work. It is my first bike and this is my first slip but I want to avoid ruining the paint work.

I've read some dubious reviews about the R&G crash bungs. They have the potential to crack the engine block.

I can't find much else on the market other than a Hepco & Becker frames which someone already mentioned on a different thread in here.

Any recommendations please? To fit a CB650R

SW Motech do some crash bars but they are a love it/hate type of affair. Some people like the look and others don't. They offer pretty decent protection though.

Thanks! option over load.

The Evotek bungs give me the same feeling as teh R&G option. A fall could crack the engine block. Thebumper bars however unslightly they are might offer more protection (in my opinion). The best I've found are probably these https://www.hepco-and-becker-luggage.co.uk/#

What you are looking to avoid are the units that have 1 mounting bolt, that upper rear engine mount, and are extremely long from that point. There are several out there tgat do not mount that way, just don’t go into overload by knowing what you want to avoid. Evotech ones do use two points, one is the suspect one, however, but the majority of the force is applied to the strong, front mounting point.

Otherwise, GB engine covers are a good alternative to stop case damage.

Thats a great bit of info, thanks. I appreciate it.

Just looking at the Evotech ones, they seem to be single point mounting just like the R&G version. Taking on board what you said I'll be safer going with the frame design which have dual mounting points.

Ok, I misspoke a bit about the Evotech and was looking at the CBR offerings that gave the two points. Those CB single bolt mountings are great because those will go through the large area on the front of the motor and be very stable and secure. See GregTheWalrus3 @GregTheWalrus3 trip report about how well his worked for him.

The ones you want to avoid use the rear engine mount only. Those can break engine cases very easily.

If I may add here, based on the photos on R&G’s website, it looks like they mount to the same (front) bolt that the EvoTech do. And yes, mine did recently save me from a potentially tour-ending drop hundreds of miles from home (and basically in the middle of nowhere - cell reception in the area was spotty at best)...

For the record, this was literally a standstill drop to the side, I was not moving at the time (stalled the bike while at full lock doing U-turn) so YMMV as all drops/slides are different. Personally I am of the opinion that in any crash at speed you’re lucky if you can ride the bike home. I purchased these exactly for the situation I encountered, and thank my lucky stars I did and that they saved me. I will say that besides the slider, the only other part that hit pavement in my drop was the mirror (which immediately loosened so didn’t really absorb much impact) - so EvoTech designed these pretty well that the slider took all of the force of the drop and didn’t allow any important parts to contact the ground.

That being said, if you really want a good looking set w/ 2 mounting points - I would check out T-Rex Racing. Ironically I had just bought a pair of those right before my tour where the EvoTech’s saved my bike, and will likely swap them over this winter... I don’t think they were available back when I bought the bike in May because I also had a lot of trouble finding a set w/ 2 mounting pts, but T-Rex is a highly regarded company so they should perform well if needed.

Of course, I would never hesitate to recommend the EvoTech’s as they did their job perfectly in my “real-world test”!!! 👍

Out of interest, do you have a link to the T-Rex ones. I don't see them on the website.
